Honest Myth:Brazilian- Boto Cor de Rosa

Today’s legend features one of my favorite folklore from Brazil. The Boto Cor de Rosa is the legend of the pink dolphins in the Amazonian river. There are real dolphins with a pinkish tint (because of the food they eat), and this is the legend of the magical qualities of the dolphins. The dolphins are said to be enchanted shape-shifters that become young beaus at night and seduce women.

The legend goes that Amazon Pink Dolphin becomes attractive young men each evening to go to parties. He looks for parties to go have fun at and pick up young ladies. After seducing them and staying the night together, he disappears and goes back to the river. When they change, the dolphins become very handsome dressing in all white suits. When they become men, they still have traces of their dolphin self. The pink dolphin still have the blowhole on the top of the head. To hide that they always wear white hats similar to zoot-hats.Untitled

The actual story goes that near the river banks lived an indigenous family with an 18 year old daughter Rosita. Everyday she would go down to the river to do chores like wash clothing. One day as she went to collect water, Rosita decided to dive into the river for a swim. As she swam, a young man appeared sitting at the edge of the river. They started to talk, the young man told Rosita that he was a fisherman and after some time she fell in love with him. Together the spent the night.

Every night from then on, they met at the same spot. It began to worry her family, so her father confronted her. Rosita told him that she was in love and wanted to marry a young fisherman. The father agreed and invited the young man to stay the night. The father noticed that the man would leave every morning coming back only in the evening. Yet one fateful night, the dolphin forgot to wake before dawn, so when Rosita woke she found a pink dolphin in her bed. He tried to escape, but the father shot him with a shot gun killing the dolphin. The man never came back, and Rosita began to believe that he left her. Worst of all, she was pregnant. Nine months later, Rosita died giving birth, and the father found that the baby was a pink dolphin. He realized then that the fisherman was the dolphin he killed. From then on all girls were warned to avoid mysterious young men found near the river bank.

Another form of the myth, is that the dolphins were once humans that were cursed. These myths most likely arrived because of off intelligent the dolphins are. They  aid the fishermen in catching fish and are known to use their noses to help those drowning in the river. They have also been called encantados which means enchanted ones. This name is often used for any magical fairy like being that uses their powers to seduce others.

Sometimes the dolphin will seduce young girls just to have sex for a night, but in some cases he can bring her to Encante. The Encante is a paradise palace under the water, but once the person is brought here they are never able to leave.

Daily Myth-Brazilian: Curupira

So everyday at about midnight I post one of these, but it seems that the time listed here is a universal time or something so all the daily myths are not really labeled on the correct dates. I hope that is O.K. I just felt the need to point this out, because it really bothered me that they were not listed as the correct dates and that my time does not correspond to the WordPress one. Anyways lets talk about mythology! This one is a little bit shorter than I was hoping.

Curupira (I found this picture on pinterest, and it is so cute. But I am having difficulty finding who the artist is so if anyone knows please tell me).

Curupira (I found this picture on pinterest, and it is so cute. But I am having difficulty finding who the artist is so if anyone knows please tell me).

Curupira is a character of Brazilian folklore. It began as the folklore of the Tupi people, indigenous people of Brazil who lived near the Amazon river, and became a story of all Brazilians.

He lives with in the Amazon rain forest protecting the animals and plants with in it. A little dwarf man, Curupira is usually shown as a little kid like Saci. In most depictions, he is riding a large wild boar like creature called Collard Peccary. This is because he seems similar to another figure called the Caapora/Caipora who looks similar Curupira, but his feet are not backwards. Curupira has bright redish orange hair that looks like fire, some say green pointy, and his most distinguishing feature of feet that are turned backwards. The legends say that Curupira creates mischief for  travelers and hunters, primarily using his backwards feet to create fake footprints to confuse them. Other ways he confuses hunters is by creating loud sounds, whistling, and producing illusions so as to scare away the people.

His main goal is to protect the wildlife in the forest. He kills hunters who take to much from the forest, more than they need. His primary concern are animals who are taking care of their young.

In one small story, Curupira goes around knocking on the each tree and listening to the sound. He is checking for the tree’s firmness. If any tree seems as if it could fall soon during a storm or rough wind, he warns all the forest creatures to stay away from that area till the tree comes down. Curupira is also considered to have heightened speed when running and to be quite strong, giving him the ability to protect the forest and to be faster than the hunters.

Daily Myth-Brazilian: Saci Perere

For Daily Mythologies, I decided to include folklore because they are just as interesting and fun. Today’s will be another michivious little creature: Saci Perere!!!

Saci as he is depicted in the Turma de Monica (very popular comics in Brazil).

Saci as he is depicted in the Turma de Monica (very popular comics in Brazil).

Saci is one of the more famous Brazilian folklore. I remember hearing about him from a very young age. He can be found on T.V. shows, in comic books, children’s books, football (soccer) mascot, and songs. He is probably the best known character of Brazilian stories.

He is usually depicted as a young black boy, any where between the ages of about ten to thirteen, with only one leg and holes in the palms of his hands. He is black as coal, which is what his name means, and he wears a little red cap, smokes a pipe, and sometimes has on little shorts. There are some depictions of him can look a little demonic, but for the most part he is just a normal looking kid (minus a leg).

Saci is super mischievous, pulling pranks on people for chuckles. Like the Kappa he can be shown to do some deeds that are simply annoying and in some places he is shown to be malevolent, but that is rarer.

Anything simple that can occur badly in the daily life is considered Saci’s fault. If all the thread in a sewing kit is tangled, eggs go bad, food is burnt, or something is lost, then Saci did it. He is very restless, constantly moving around misbehaving with silly antics.

Saci also has magical powers that assist him in his pranks. He gains his magical abilities from his little red cap. The cap allows him to disappear and reappear where ever he likes, and though he may have only one leg he is still very nimble: he rides dust devils and tornadoes and horses with out saddles very well. He becomes a bird called the Striped Cuckoo (matita pereira) who is hard to catch and whose sad song seems to come from nowhere.

To stop Saci one has to run over a river, because he loses his powers, or throw knotted ropes onto the floor, because he will stop feeling the need to untie them. Taking Saci’s hat is like taking the Kappa’s arm. Since it is the source of his power, he will be willing to do anything for it back.

Saci depicted in the Turma do Perere somics, in which he is the main charcter.

Saci’s hat is known to have a very bad smell to it, and those who take it from him gain a horrible smell that cannot be washed off.
